One of the stars in Steven Spielberg's box office hit Ready Player One has revealed that they are committed to future sequels, even though they aren't sure if or when it will happen. Olivia Cooke - who played the dual role of Art3mis and Samantha Cook - is locked in to reprise her character if a follow-up is announced. However, the actress admits that she has no insider knowledge about the progress of the project, which has already been christened Ready Player Two by some.

Ready Player One is the Spielberg directed movie of Ernest Cline's much-loved 2011 novel of the same name. Despite plenty of pop culture and narrative changes, the movie succeeds in recreating the over-populated future of 2045 which is largely driven by the shared virtual world of the OASIS. Cooke had been in talks to play the female lead since 2015, being one of several talented actresses on the shortlist. She plays opposite Tye Sheridan - who portrays Parzival/Wade Watts - and the pair eventually become crucial to the survival and integrity of the OASIS, as well as developing a romantic relationship. Cooke received praise for her performance, and the film has currently earnt over $582m worldwide, becoming one of the highest grossing movies of 2018 so far.

Whilst promoting a new UK adaptation of the classic novel Vanity Fair, Cooke spoke to Digital Spy about the possibility of a sequel and her commitment to it;

"I've signed my life away, so I'm contracted to sequels but I don't know [if they're happening]. I haven't heard anything. We'll see... I don't think there's a Ready Player Two book, I don't know if they'd want to write that first?"

It's encouraging to hear that Cooke is already onboard for further journeys into the OASIS, even if a question mark still hangs over that possibility. It seems safe to assume that Sheridan would have also signed up to the same contract and would be tied into any sequels. Given that both the book and the film ends with the two lead characters as a 'power-couple' and linked intrinsically to the thriving virtual world, the continued involvement of both actors would seem to be a given necessity. It would be nice to think that other cast members such as Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance are also ear-marked to reappear as their characters, especially as unanswered questions still exist about Halliday's avatar.

But given the fact that it took Spielberg so long to film the adaptation of the original book, and that Cline is still scribing the next novel, it could be a long wait for both Cooke and fans of the first film. Although Cline has previously stated that his book will be a sequel to his own work and not the movie, he also admits that he has been influenced by Spielberg and his involvement with the production, so the continuing story is likely to carry on themes from the movie as well. In the meantime, the recent release of the film to Blu-ray and digital media, means that fans can enjoy the plentiful pop culture references and Easter eggs that they missed the first time around, no doubt giving the film longer life in the public consciousness. We'll bring you any further news about a sequel to Ready Player One as we get it.
